We know the big question on everyone’s mind is: When are we reopening? While we’re not quite ready to pin down a date just yet, we can confidently say — we’re close.
There’s been a huge amount of work happening in the background to bring the range back to life. From compliance and governance upgrades to infrastructure planning and system overhauls — every piece brings us a step closer.
To everyone who’s contributed time, energy, and expertise: thank you. Your efforts haven’t gone unnoticed.
We truly can’t wait to see both familiar faces and new members out on the range again soon — doing what we love, together.
There’s a major push underway to bring JSSI into the digital era — covering everything from compliance and data handling to long-term recordkeeping.
We’re already halfway through the enormous task of scanning and digitally filing over 25 years of records. It’s a big job, but it’s laying the groundwork for a smoother, more compliant future.
One of the key pieces of this upgrade is the introduction of a custom-built Authorisation Matrix. This database has been designed specifically for sporting shooters and is backed by proper evidence collection and audit trails. It’s not just about ticking boxes — it’s about making sure every activity on our range is covered by the correct qualifications, insurance, and duty-of-care protections.
As part of this system, every member will undergo a verification of competency check before participating in range activities once we reopen. Your assessor will determine the most appropriate form of verification — which could include training records, prior experience, demonstration, or other supporting evidence.
Once verified, you’ll receive a PDF certificate of authorisation, and your supporting documents will be stored in a secure database, ready for review or audit if ever required.

This system has taken countless hours of work from Phil, our Assistant Secretary, and once rolled out, Captains will take over the next phase — working with each of you to get your records in place.
We know many of our members have decades of experience, and this isn’t about re-testing or second-guessing that. It’s about documenting it properly, once, in a way that helps the whole club continue to operate.
Please engage fully with the process when your Captain reaches out. The smoother this goes, the sooner we can get back to doing what we all love — shooting safely, responsibly, and with confidence that our house is in order.
